Carl Preiksaitis, MD, MEd, is an emergency physician and Clinical Assistant Professor of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine. His research examines how artificial intelligence changes the work of medicine, and how clinicians learn, exercise judgment, and develop expertise as technology becomes part of everyday practice.

He co-directs the Human Experience and Advancement Lab (HEAL), which studies how technology shapes human experience in healthcare, and directs the Stanford Integrated Emergency Research Repository and Archive (SIERRA), a multimodal data platform supporting collaborative emergency care research.

He argued in Nature Medicine that AI scribes alone would not solve physicians' documentation burden, and his work since has tested that question directly, including a study of ambient AI adoption and documentation time in Annals of Emergency Medicine. The through line is an implementation science lens on how these tools actually get adopted in clinical and training environments, connecting workflow and documentation burden to the supervision and assessment decisions that follow. His research is supported by the National Institutes of Health, the American Medical Association, and the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine.

As an Associate Editor of the Journal of Graduate Medical Education, he writes the AI Teaching Rounds series, helping educators navigate the decisions AI introduces into clinical training. He leads AI initiatives at the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine and directs Stanford's Medical Education Residency Track.

Dr. Preiksaitis earned his MD from NYU Grossman School of Medicine, completed his emergency medicine residency and medical education fellowship at Stanford, and holds a Master of Education in Medical Education from the University of Cincinnati.
